This project involved the transformation of the old Surrey Memorial Hospital emergency department into a new, state-of-the-art 10 bed unit. The Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Stabilization Unit provides a therapeutic environment for children and adolescents experiencing an acute mental health crisis.
The scope included demolition of the entire existing space including cabinets, walls, electrical, mechanical, and exterior walls and construction of new treatment rooms, patient rooms, offices, millwork, flooring and walls. Mechanical and electrical upgrades throughout the space were also performed.
The unit features a Snoezelen™ Room, a multi-sensory environment used to help reduce agitation and anxiety and stimulate and encourage communication, the first of its kind for children and youth in a hospital psychiatric unit in Canada.
